Garbage Disposal Installation: Doing It the Right Way

Thinking about garbage disposal installation on your kitchen? You might want to hire a professional to do the job for best results. However, if you consider yourself as an experienced do-it-yourselfer, with the right tools and materials, you will be able to equip your kitchen with a garbage disposal that will make your life around the kitchen that much easier.

Garbage Disposal Installation: Doing It the Right Way

When doing garbage disposal installation, make sure that you that the electrical outlet for your disposal is switched off. This can be done by turning off the circuit breaker for that particular area or by removing the fuse.

Remove the waste assembly that exists on your sink including the sink flange all the way to the trap. When the waste lines are gone, take the mounting assembly off the disposal. Apply plumber’s putty around your new flange before installing it on your sink hole.

Place a heavy object on top of the flange so you can secure the upper mounting assembly. From there, you can follow the directions indicated by the manufacturer on how to replace the gasket before slipping the mounting ring on top of the flange.

Add the snap ring to the flange until it gets secured on the groove found on the flange. See to it that the three screws for mounting are tightened securely so that the assembly is fitted against the sink perfectly.

Part of your garbage disposal installation is to attach the discharge tube first before attaching the disposal unit to the mounting assembly.

Make sure that there is no waste debris left behind on the P-trap. Follow this up by preparing the connection to your dishwasher to the drain. This usually involves removing the drain plug from the nipple of the dishwasher then installing the dishwasher’s drain hose.

The next step is to secure the mounting tabs by sliding it over the mounting tracks. You can do this by positioning the disposal underneath the mounting assembly. Insert the top of your disposal into the mounting assembly.

Make sure that the mounting tabs are locked in place by rotating the mounting ring on the lower portion of the mounting assembly. Secure the screws tightly with a screwdriver or a wrench.

Another step when it comes to garbage disposal installation is to align the discharge tube with the drain trap. Replumbing the wasteline is recommended if your sink’s model is double-bowled. On the other hand, an extension tube will be all that you need.

The last part when it comes to garbage disposal installation is to connect it to your power.

You can purchase a remote-control switch or an air switch if you prefer. You can always wire the electrical cord that is grounded on to your disposal. To make things easier for you, you can hire a professional to do the job for you.

By following these steps, you can get your garbage disposal up and running in no time at all. You might be surprised on how easy it is to do your own garbage disposal installation these days especially when you have the right tools and materials on hand.
